Raiders overcome the Reivers

The Tynedale second team travelled to a wet Mitford Road for the CANDY league fixture, bolstered by the return to the squad of several players recovered from injuries and first team outings. Unfortunately they lost Rory Dixon with a hamstring injury in the warm up, forcing coach Ben Archer to reshuffle the three quarter line. The Corbridge side were attacking in the opening period but strong defensive play by the Morpeth side kept them out until the 12th minute when Will Nankevill was able to cross the line for the opening try Josh Leslie added the conversion.

The Tynedale side continued to play in the Morpeth half and the front row of Owen Loughed, captain Ed Craney and man of the match Oliver Wall gained the upper hand in the scrum, allowing the Raiders to gain clean possession, which allowed livewire scrum half Sam Harrison to feed the back line with great quick ball, and this was put to great use when fly half Leslie spotted space out on the left and put in a precise cross field kick to find Liam Pitt out on the wing who gathered the slippery ball to complete an opportunist try.

With Tynedale gaining territorial advantage through strong carries from Ed Cawthorne, Micky Hall, Callum Morrell and Seb Jansen the Morpeth defence were made to work hard to prevent the Raiders from adding to the score. but inevitably conceded the next score when the replacement centre Will Richards crossed for the try, Leslie converted. Good lineout ball was being won by the hard working Jacob Brown and Hall, and with the Morpeth side on the back foot, Tynedale lost influential second row Nankevill with a knee injury, with replacement James Sample coming on from a strong replacement line up, and it was lock forward Dicky Dunn who added the final try of the half, Leslie's conversion gave the Raiders a 26- 0 advantage at the break.

Changes were made at half time with David O'Neill coming into the front row and Ben Bell making a welcome return from a lengthy injury lay off. However Morpeth made the better start to the half and scored a converted try to gain a foothold back into the contest, and began to test the Tynedale defence, but full back James Ferguson was able clear the danger and made a couple of great runs from deep to break into the Morpeth half, aided by abrasive carries from the experienced Bell,
Tynedale scored the next try through Bell who crossed on the left side of the posts, Leslie converting. The final change had been made when Owen Shield came on at hooker to replace captain Craney, but it was the home side. to their credit, who scored the final converted try, just before the final whistle to bring to an end a well contested game in testing conditions.
