Centurions edge fiercely contested cup tie

Wallace Cousin29 Jan 2019 - 07:38

Two late scores secure victory

This was a fiercely contested cup-tie that was on a knife edge until two tries in the final ten minutes saw Tynedale claim a famous victory. Although outweighed in the forwards, Andy Neil, Ethan McLeod and Phil Scandle more than held their own at close quarters. Indeed, when Scandle switched to tight head, Tynedale began to gain the upper hand the scrums. Adam Binks and Keith Johnson struck up an excellent line out partnership but, in addition, were in the lead all over the pitch as they wore down their heavier opponents.

Tynedale took an early lead when Mason McLeod was able to link with scrum half Andy Harvey. Ollie Murrell continued the good work and was able to put winger Robbie Nixon clear who then showed a clean pair of heels to race over.

Bishop soon hit back with a fine try of their own before Jason Armstrong hammered up the middle of the field. The drive was halted 10 metres short but from a resulting scrum number 8 Ollie Hillary powered over and Spencer Gorman added the points. This 5-12 lead was held until the break but only because of fine defence by Mark Smales and Tom Shrimpton and also following a thunderous try saving tackle by captain and full back Jake Sloan.

Immediately after the restart the Centurions seem to be caught off guard and the home side were able to score two well crafted tries in the first ten minutes to take a 17-12 lead. This forced the visitors to dig deep and fight their way back into the game.

Good work from Charlie Rutherford and Callum Snowdon saw the ball moved from the half way line and Hillary appeared in support to add his second try with Gorman knocking over the conversion. The lively fly-half Gorman then added a try of his own following good work from Chris Nicholls to restore the lead.

This lead was eroded when the Bishop hit back hard with a try of their own but missed the conversion that would have levelled the scores. This only set up a grand finale when their fitness and strong set of replacements saw Tynedale score two late tries. Spencer Gorman glided over for his second after good work from Dave Nicholls and Oliver Shrimpton before converting a nice try from Sloan.

This final flourish gave the scoreline a comfortable appearance that disguised a very close match that was in the balance until those late scores.
