The Centurions returned to winning league form against a weakened Ryton team hit by injuries and late call-offs. By contrast, the seasonal debuts of skipper Jake Sloan, Ali Hopps, Michael Ramsay and Adam Telfer were a great boost for the home side.
Quickly out of the blocks, Tynedale dominated the first half. Alex Birkenshaw, a prop forward who plays like a back row, set up the first try. Tidying up loose ball he drove forward, released Sloan who ducked and dived before finding Ryan Laverty to cross in the corner.
Shortly afterwards, a deliberate knock on resulted in a Ryton yellow card and what seemed like the harsh award of of a penalty try. With the advantage of the extra man two further tries were added. Full-back Allan Hyslop appeared down the blind side at a scrum to power over. Hyslop was involved again following good work by Jason Armstrong and Ethan McLeod. He sprinted down the left wing, drew defenders, fed the supporting Laverty whose quick hands found prop Ramsay who scooted in from 20 metres for a wonderful try.
Another prop forward Telfer, in a cameo role, was on the shoulder of Martyn Hutton following a typical bustling run, and showed a clean pair of heels to despairing defenders before touching down from 30 metres. Telfer then turned creator as he released man of the match Steven Raine on a try scoring burst down the middle to leave the score at the break 40-0.
To their credit, Ryton refused to throw in the towel and the second half was a much closer affair. It required the cutting edge of hooker Robbie Binks to break the deadlock. A quickly taken penalty saw Josh Schollick and Shaun Taylor drive close before Binks touched down despite the attentions of several defenders. He added a second after debutant Luke Allman and Armstrong combined in midfield, made ground and the busy hooker was on hand to dive in at the corner.
The visitors were now creating scoring chances of their own and, unusually, it was Tynedale's own Graeme Hutton, who had switched shirts to cover for an injured player, finishing off a driving move in the corner.
Any thoughts of a come-back were dispelled when Simon Pattison and McLeod worked hard to set Raine free in the centre to score his second. Ryton, to their credit, came again and bagged another try through Adam McGarry after good work at a line-out.
With almost the last play of the game Binks was on hand to land his hat-trick of tries in the corner to complete the scoring. Hyslop, who kicked well throughout, landed six conversions and shaved the post with his other attempts to cap a fine game.
The Centurions were on top for much of the game against a spirited Ryton team who competed bravely right to the end.
