Strong Centurions side win it in 1st half

A strong Centurions side were quickly into their stride as Arin Pekdemir fielded the kick off deep in his own half and set off on an elusive 50 metre run to create great field position. Ian Charlton and Ethan McLeod charged forward allowing lively scrum half Andy Harvey to break blind. Excellent support from fullback Allan Hyslop saw him exchange passes with his winger Rory Dixon who touched down out wide.

Michael Ramsay and James Doody combined well from the restart to set up another attack and this time a grubber kick from Hyslop allowed left winger Seb Jansen to show dribbling skills and score.

The pressure was relentless and it was a powerful break from Jason Armstrong that set up another attack. This time Dan Kerr showed his soccer skills with a delicate chip, catch and try. Centres Steven Raine and Martyn Hutton then got into the act driving up close to win a 5 metre scrum. Rhys Loughead from number 8 took off like a human missile and dived in low scattering defenders to score an unstoppable try.

These four tries in the first quarter might have led to a capitulation but, to their credit, Novos slowly regained their composure. They came back into the game and were unlucky to concede near the end of the half when Kerr made a great interception and won a 40 metre footrace to bag his second try. Hyslop had added two conversions to leave the score at the break 29-0.

The second half was a much more even contest as Novos took advantage of home indiscipline and scored two tries from quickly taken penalties. A fightback was on the cards and it required a defensive shift from replacements Spencer Tolley, Graeme Hutton and Jake Sloan to prevent further scoring opportunities being taken.

Veteran Andrew Purves then came on to steady the ship and his turnover led to the try of the match. Ali Hopps broke down the short side to find Jeff Wheallans who was caught close to touch. Luckily non-stop flanker Kael Horton ran a wonderful line, cut inside and raced over with Dixon adding the points.

Dixon scored a solo second try powering over from his own tapped penalty to secure a comfortable victory in the end against game opponents who did well to get back into the match after their slow start.
