With a lovely warm sunny spring day and a soft yet improving pitch for training on we did some bulldogs to warm up, followed by splitting the boys into groups, I took the small group doing tackle training and Linz took the others to do game training and see if the tackle training was introduced during general play, more on that in a bit. The tackle training was kept in a small area using a tackle shield (thank you Andrew for being the pad dummy and taking the hits) with just 4 boys, we ran through the bump tackle and spin out from a tackle slowly building up to full speed with pointers given when needed, the boys willingness and enthusiasm for hitting the shield and spinning out or just trying run over or through the "tackler" was impressive and only got greater when the boys each had a turn being the shield dummy, I did have to support some of the smaller boys but they proved their bravery by standing and taking the hits, well done guys. The game training with Linz went very well again, the boys seem to learn a lot during game sessions and with just the technical pointers this seems to be the way to go at the moment. Linz commented that after the first group had done the bump/spin tackle session that the boys were starting to use it in game time, but not over use it which shows maturity during play and that they are thinking and learning to make decisions during play. This continued until all had been through and we set up a all in game with 12 attending today we had a small pitch 6 a side, which proved some good running some of the lines being very good and instinctive, less running backwards or sideway to avoid a tackle and more passing going on, I did whistle a few times when the offside and everybody gather round the ball at the breakdown occurred, I know this is mainly down to enthusiasm and wanting the ball to run with it and will temper over time as they grow in understanding of the game and the play, we will continue to work on it ensuring the boys quickly line up for attack or defence using their decisions as to where they need to be on the field of play. Well done all round fellas for some great training sessions and commitment.
