VETS FEST 2026
So, no Tynedale team playing at Corbridge this week. Will the site be deserted? No, not quite:-
We are thrilled that the Wooden Spoon’s annual vets tournament is returning to Tynedale Park this SATURDAY.

(The Wooden Spoon is a grant making charity which benefits thousands of disabled and disadvantaged children annually.)

This year’s VETS FEST is a considerably bigger event, with 600 players signed up to play. Hundreds of Vets players from the UK and Ireland will compete in Men’s, Women’s, Vintage Vets (over 50’s) and Walking-Rugby tournaments.
Teams will start to arrive on Friday and the rugby will get underway around 10am on Saturday morning, going on until around 7pm.
Each Wooden Spoon ‘Region’ is invited to enter a team & commit to a fundraising effort ahead of the event. The Overall Winners will be the team with the best combined score from their on-pitch and off-field efforts.
Alongside the event, a programme of entertainments will take place in the marquee alongside the 1st XV pitch with food and drinks on offer.

HUDDERSFIELD RUFC V TYNEDALE RFC

Our 1stXV are on the road for the second successive Saturday this weekend as we head back into Yorkshire to renew our rivalry with our old friends from Huddersfield.
A big day for the Raiders as they open up their North East Counties One campaign at Houghton while the Hadrians travel to face Novos in the Candy League.

HUDDERSFIELD RUFC
• The club was originally founded in 1870 and is one of the oldest rugby clubs in Yorkshire. Huddersfield were playing in the top ranks of English clubs when, in August 1895 the town hosted a meeting at the George Hotel and was one of the twenty clubs that resigned from the Rugby Union to set up The Northern Rugby Football Union, which allowed players to be compensated for 'Broken Time.' This meant they could claim for wages lost by playing on Saturdays. They were not allowed to make a living from the game – they were not 'professional.'
• After that breakaway of Northern clubs from the RFU the original Huddersfield club stopped playing for 14 years. The amateur club then re-formed in 1909.
• The club has played at various delightfully named venues- Rifle Field, Fartown, Luck Lane, Salendine Nook, Waterloo and finally, Lockwood Park.
• In 1946 the club changed its name to Huddersfield Rugby Union Football Club.
• In 1996 the club sold part of its Waterloo property for £1.4 million to Morrisons to help fund the purchase of the 26-acre former brewery estate at Lockwood Park from Bass, to create a major sports complex backed by a £1.84 million Sports Council lottery grant.
• Mini-rugby began in England in 1969 at Huddersfield.
• Lockwood Park is now the home, not only of Huddersfield RUFC, but the site of a multi-sports complex with a capacity of 1,500 (with seating for 500). It is also the home of Huddersfield Road Runners AC, Huddersfield Astronomical Society, HRUFC Bowling Club, and the Borough Club which offers snooker facilities.

TYNEDALE V HUDDESRFIELD
In the past Tynedale programme writers reported that the first League match was on the 15th October 1994 when the teams drew 9-9 in a match at Huddersfield. That is not true!

The two clubs did meet several times in the years prior to leagues but in fact the first League match between the two teams took place at Tynedale Park on 9th April 1994, a match which Tynedale won 17-12.

The teams which played then should interest many Tynedale ex-players , and perhaps some of the Huddersfield supporters who might remember some of their team that day:-

In the Tynedale team were Scott Ferguson, Chris Leslie, Richard Parker and Steven Dunn who have all had sons in Tynedale first teams in recent years. Graham Yates is a club Vice-President, Steve Turnbull is the Colts Manager whilst Craig Johnston is Fixtures Secretary and in charge of the Bar and grounds.

WHERE HAVE HUDDERSFIELD BEEN
Tynedale and Huddersfield last played each other 3 seasons ago in the 2023-2024 season with Tynedale coming out on top in both matches, 32-18 in the home fixture and 57-19 in the return match at Huddersfield.
Huddersfield did in fact have a difficult time that season and finished bottom of the league and were relegated into Regional 1 North East for the 2024-2025 season.
Huddersfield just missed out on an immediate return to National 2 North – finishing runners-up to champions Scunthorpe.

The following 2025-2026 season (last season) Huddersfield were level transferred to Regional 1 North-West and finished champions after an exciting winner-takes-all final match of the season against Anselmians – Huddersfield triumphed 36-26.

HUDDERSFIELD THIS SEASON
Very early days but Huddersfield matches have certainly kept the scoreboard busy.
In their 3 matches to date they have scored 13 tries but conceded 19 tries – by comparison Tynedale have scored 7 tries and conceded 17 tries.
