OBITUARY

Mike Sharman
The sudden death of Mike Sharman came as a great shock to all members of the club. Mike was one of the instigators of mini-rugby and a great supporter of colts and junior rugby at the club. He prepared the club’s centenary year brochures and promoted rugby intensely through the Hexham Courant where he had served, first as a reporter and later as Editor.

First XV
The first team’s season will not be remembered for its success, but for the experience gained by so many young players – Gary Taylor, Sean Crystal, Trevor Holliday and Gary Rutherford. There were good wins in Scotland against Melrose, Jedforest, Selkirk, Watsonians and Kilmarnock.

Steve Mullins took over as coach. Chris Dixon and Graham Sturgeon played for Northumberland; Ed. Saunders for the County Presidents XV.

Match Programme
Tynedale v West Hartlepool (4th Feb 1984)

Junior Sides
The 2nd XV had a very successful season. Led by two evergreen stalwarts, Alan Stokoe and Justin Smart, a number of young players emerged – Richard Parker II, Richard Parker III, Martin English and Jeremy Fawcett, and the team’s season was completed by the winning of the Northumberland Senior Shield – beating Ponteland in the final.

The Grasshoppers was run as an Under-21 side early in the season, but this proved impractical later. Many youngsters progressed to higher teams, and the established regulars such as Alan Henry, Tony Coates, Paul Charlton, David English and Steve Bradley helped with this process.

The Colts won 17 of their 28 games. Junior Colts won 7 of their 19 matches.
Promising players included Tony Moran, Paul Leonard, Edward Parker, Clive Chadwick, Aidrian Tallantye, Nich Barnes, Barry Hope, Paul Pender, Mark Fletcher and David Young.

Tynedale Academicals won the county Schools’ club cup at the County ground.

Colts Management
Peter Fenwick, who had served the club’s colts and the County colts for 7 years, had moved to Kent. Tynedale’s Maj. Cyril Parker had taken over the county colts.

Ene
A special dinner in honour of Stuart Enevoldson (Ene) was held to celebrate his years of work for the club, before his move to Scarborough.

President
Jim Chapman retired after his two-year term as President and was succeeded by Douglas Hamilton.
